Job Summary: This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Vision Net’s related fiber-optic network, transmission/data systems, and outside plant (OSP) facilities.  Duties include installation, maintenance, testing, and support services that encompasses the DWDM, Carrier Ethernet, and SONET networks, as well as Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic infrastructure. 

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventative maintenance, and support all network services related to; OSP network, DWDM network, SONET network, Carrier Ethernet network, Access Tandem Switch, SS7 network, and IP network.
  • Provision, provide technician support, installation, and testing of network services and equipment.
  • Perform turn up and testing of new services with customers, and maintenance of existing services.
  • Provide direct customer support as needed.
  • Participate in a rotational On-Call schedule and be available for trouble call-out on 24-hour basis.  Coordinate availability with other technicians and the Network Operations Center (NOC).
  • Provide Tier 3 technical support and troubleshooting assistance for the Network Operations Center as needed and initiate appropriate trouble tickets.
  • Maintain manual and electronic documents, files, and records for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail.
  • Perform accurate locating and marking of underground facilities including, but not limited to, fiber optic lines.
  • Perform site surveys as required and provide site survey documentation.
  • Oversee, track, and report the installation and quality of work being performed by OSP contractors.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and general appearance of all switch and transmission buildings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of:
  • Company policies, procedures, products, and services.
  • General office practices and procedures.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Telecommunications network operations (DWDM, SONET, Ethernet, IP, SS7, and Access Tandem), Outside Plant and Central Office installation standards.
  • RUS and Bellcore Telecommunication standards
  • Industry trends and technologies.
  • Construction safety
  • OSP construction communication, permits, staking sheets, GIS maps, and contracts.
  • Utility locator best practices.

 

  • Skill to:
  • Write original material, edit, proofread, and finalize written material.
  • Operate various types of office equipment such as a computer, copy machine, fax machine and multi-line telephone.
  • Operate various types of computer software (MS Office, Visio, CAD)
  • Operate network test equipment (OTDR, SONET, Ethernet, power meter test set)
  • Operate locate equipment and technology to accurately locate underground utilities.

Education and Experience: 

Any combination equivalent to the following education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; 2 to 4 years of telecommunications experience, ideally with DWDM, Ethernet, IP networks and technology, Access Tandem Switches, and Central Office installations; experience in construction of outside plant facilities; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical and Other Requirements:

This position may require 8 to 10 hours days, 25% to 60% travel, be On-Call, night work, flexible hours, and some weekends.
