The Morton Arboretum is a world-renowned nonprofit with a unique opportunity for a creative self-starter interested in trees, nature, and conservation. We’re seeking someone who thrives in a fast-paced and collaborative environment and has experience creating marketing collateral, print and digital advertising and directing photographers in an outdoor setting. You’ll be part of a talented Marketing and Communications team, working in a business casual office, with 1,700 acres of nature and beauty outside your office door.  

 

Position Summary:  Design a wide variety of communications from concept to completion, under the direction of the Head of Design, to elevate The Morton Arboretum brand and engage audiences. Project types include print and digital collateral, publications, advertising, and web design. 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Apply core design principles to create concepts conducive to each project’s goals and audiences, while maintaining project budgets and deadlines. Project types range from print to digital and include collateral and brochures, on-site signage, advertisements, web graphics, and imagery to support digital channels.

  • Participate in project kick-off meetings, ask clarifying questions to understand the project goals, strategy, tactics, and schedule for the assignment.

  • Present design options that align with Arboretum brand guidelines and address and incorporate direction and input. Collaborate with colleagues in Marketing and Communications and internal stakeholders on all design assignments.

  • Develop printing specifications and obtain estimates from outside vendors for Arboretum projects. Organize and produce digital and print-ready concepts and comps for assigned work according to specifications. Preflight, package, and prepare design files for printers and media outlets. 

  • Maintain and archive production files according to departmental procedures and standards. 

  • Participate in the development of the photography editorial calendar. Collaborate with the design team to guide, schedule, and direct photographers for creation of original images to be used in a wide variety of visual communications. Edit and maintain image assets files.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design required. 2+ years professional experience working in Adobe Creative Suite required. Ability to work from design concept to completion required. Experienced and proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Google applications, scanning and color correction required. Knowledge of and ability to apply core design principles including alignment, repetition, contrast, hierarchy, and balance required. Ability to develop multiple ideas or concepts required. Digital photography, website CMS, and illustration experience preferred. Excellent written communication skills required.

Strong interest in acquiring a thorough understanding of the Arboretum, its mission, programs, and staff.   • Physical Demands: Requires some physical activity: limited lifting and carrying (up to 20 lbs.), traveling around the Arboretum buildings and grounds with photographers. Some local travel for press checks.

  • Work Environment: Fast paced office environment. Work is performed primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor activity for photo shoots.

  • Equipment: General office equipment, digital camera, scanner, design tools.
