The Morton Arboretum is a world-renowned nonprofit dedicated to protecting and growing trees locally and globally.  We are seeking someone to lead the day-to-day operations of facilities and events programs in alignment with the Arboretum’s mission. You'll be part of a great team working together to make the Arboretum exceptional.

Position Summary:  Lead Arboretum and contracted staff with facilities and events related matters, including layout diagrams, and event set-up and tear-down scheduling. Assist the daily operations and perform a variety of duties, primarily housekeeping tasks, relating to the maintenance and appearance of Arboretum buildings.

Essential Functions: 

  • Coordinate weekly room set-ups, utilizing a room scheduling program, to include special and donor events. Participate in weekly meetings with key Arboretum staff to coordinate room use and equipment needs for Arboretum events, classes, and programs.
  • Review schedules, diagrams, and equipment needs for events. Set-up and tear-down rooms for meetings, rental events, special events, and organization events, as needed, in multiple buildings and locations.
  • Coordinate with outside event set-up contractors that work for the department is done to contract specifications and/or completed to Arboretum standards. 
  • In absence of the Facilities Supervisor, ensure daily operations are successfully completed by Building Services Technicians at buildings located around the Arboretum.
  • As needed, clean and/or maintain building(s). Use all applicable equipment and cleaning supplies necessary to maintain the building(s) according to established procedures. This may include a quarterly detailed cleaning of restrooms and floors.
  • Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of custodial, restroom, and related equipment and supplies.
  • Lead and enforce safety procedures for all users, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Ensure adherence to safety guidelines and work performance in accordance with Arboretum standards and assist with staff training of equipment use and safety.
  • Assist the Facilities Supervisor with special projects, which may include preventive maintenance, and in their absence, respond to requests that are directed to the Building Services section.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.  4+ years of full-time experience in custodial work preferred.  Knowledge of the fundamental techniques of building maintenance required.  Experience in an office setting is preferred.  Ability to service and handle the basic tools, equipment, and materials used in custodial work required.  May have exposure to bloodborne pathogens as a result of job duties.  Optional vaccination (Hepatitis B vaccine) will be made available.  Certification in First Aid and CPR preferred (classes provided).  Must possess a valid driver’s license, which is subject to insurability and an annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report.  Must be able to obtain OSHA forklift certification; forklift experience preferred.  Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google applications, and scheduling software is beneficial.

  • Physical Demands: Requires regular physical activity: limited lifting and carrying (up to 75 lbs. assisted), bending, climbing (up to 12 ft.), standing (up to 7 hours daily), walking, traveling by car or truck. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment required.
  • Environment: Arboretum buildings and grounds. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. 
  • Equipment: General custodial cleaning equipment, hand truck, ladders two-way radio, general office equipment, forklift, Arboretum vehicles, pick-up truck with lift tailgate.
  • Schedule: Work requires occasional evening and regular weekend hours.

Currently, the expected hiring range is between $20-23/hour based on experience that will be evaluated during the candidate selection process, along with internal equity.
