Working closely with the Partners, our experienced Financial Controller will oversee financial operations, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and accounting standards. Responsibilities include managing financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow, billing, trust accounting, payroll, and tax compliance. The role requires excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage audits, cost control, and financial strategy in a legal environment. Residence in the EST or CST areas is preferred, but not required.
Competencies Desired
1. Financial Management & Reporting
- Expertise in financial reporting (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Ability to prepare and analyze GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Strong understanding of trust accounting (IOLTA) and ethical requirements.
- Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
2. Accounting & Compliance
- Knowledge of taxation for law firms, including pass-through entities, partnership structures, and tax planning.
- Ensuring compliance with state bar financial regulations and financial ethics rules.
- Expertise in audit preparation and financial risk management for legal practices.
- Experience with accounts collections management in a legal environment.
3. Cash Flow & Financial Strategy
- Strong cash flow management skills to ensure working capital.
- Ability to implement cost control measures and improve financial performance.
- Experience with law firm financing strategies, including partner capital contributions and lines of credit.
- Ability to advise on profitability and partner compensation structures.
4. Leadership & Communication
- Professional stakeholder communication skills with the ability to present financial insights and strategy recommendations.
- Strong negotiation skills for vendor contracts, banking relationships, and client payment terms.
- Ability to collaborate and drive a community-centric environment throughout multiple departments.
5. Legal Industry Knowledge
- Familiarity with law firm billing structures (e.g., billable hours, contingency fees, retainer agreements).
- Understanding of case cost tracking and managing client expenses.
- Knowledge of ABA (American Bar Association) guidelines and compliance.
- Experience with trust and escrow accounting.
6. Systems & Technology
- Proficiency in legal accounting and practice management software, such as Clio, PCLaw, ProLaw, or Elite 3E, and QuickBooks, NetSuite, etc.
- Knowledge of e-billing platforms and CRM and document management systems
