A Heavy Duty Diesel Truck Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other components on large trucks and heavy equipment, performing preventative maintenance, using diagnostic tools, test-driving vehicles, and keeping detailed repair records, often in challenging shop environments. 

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis & Repair: Identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using scanners, manuals, and experience; repair or replace faulty parts.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and system checks (brakes, steering, cooling).
  • Inspections: Conduct thorough vehicle inspections, including safety checks, to find faults and malfunctions.
  • Testing: Test-drive repaired vehicles to ensure proper performance and smooth operation.
  • Record Keeping: Document all repairs, parts used, time spent, and diagnostic findings accurately.
  • System Work: Service engine, transmission, chassis, air conditioning, exhaust, and lighting systems.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow OSHA guidelines, use equipment safely, and handle hazardous materials properly. 

 

Skills & Requirements

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of diesel engines and heavy vehicle systems.
  • Diagnostic Skills: Proficiency with computer diagnostic tools and scanners.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy parts (50+ lbs), stand/walk for long periods, and work in awkward positions.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled with hand tools, power tools, jacks, hoists, and specialized equipment.
  • Abiltity to weld aluminum (GTAW - Tig)
