Responsibilities

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
- Identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Interpret error codes from onboard diagnostic systems (OBD-II).

Vehicle Repairs
- Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and other systems.
- Replace faulty parts and ensure proper installation.

Routine Maintenance
- Conduct oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, and filter replacements.
- Inspect and maintain batteries, belts, hoses, and other components.

Customer Interaction
- Explain vehicle issues and recommended repairs to customers in understandable terms.
- Provide cost estimates and timelines for repairs.

Compliance and Safety
- Adhere to safety standards and environmental regulations.
- Ensure repairs meet manufacturer and industry specifications.

Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and parts used.
- Update service logs and inspection reports.
Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, software, and repair equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of vehicle systems (e.g., engines, brakes, suspension).

- Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electronic problems.

Physical Stamina
- Capable of lifting heavy parts and working in various conditions.

Education and Certification

Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a formal automotive training program (preferred).

- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in specific areas (e.g., brakes, engine repair).
- EPA 609 certification for handling refrigerants (if working on air conditioning systems).

- Automotive service technicians typically work in:
