Your role as a Specialist, Public Affairs:       

You will primarily support the organization’s public affairs initiatives, community outreach, and advocacy efforts. You will assist the Vice President, Public Affairs in executing strategic public affairs plans and priorities, including bi-national initiatives. In collaboration with the Community Impact Team, you will partner on select community projects and assist with community engagement efforts. You will also assist with tracking legislative and policy issues affecting the organization and represent the Padres in various public affairs capacities.

All the responsibilities we will trust you with:                                    

  • Support the Vice President, Public Affairs in executing public affairs initiatives, including bi-national efforts in Tijuana and Baja California
  • Track and summarize legislative and policy developments at the local and state levels
  • Assist in preparing materials for elected officials, government agencies, and internal leadership, including talking points, briefings, and presentations
  • Help coordinate meetings, events, and public policy advocacy efforts, ensuring effective planning and follow-up
  • Represent the organization at meetings, public forums, and community events as needed
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders and assist with outreach and engagement efforts
  • Support community outreach initiatives and collaborate with the Community Impact Team on select projects
  • Ensure public affairs activities align with organizational priorities and are executed professionally
  • Assist in monitoring media coverage related to public policy and government affairs that may impact the organization

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most:            

  • Proficient computer skills including experience with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., and general knowledge of basic office equipment including copier, laser printer, telephone, and computer
  • Ability to effectively work well with others in a collaborative, respectful manner
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills with capacity to handle high volumes of detailed work, multi-task and manage projects on strict deadlines
  • Maintain professional demeanor with a high degree of discretion, integrity, and accountability
  • Maintain consistent, punctual, and reliable attendance

You will be required to meet the following:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment
  • Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years of previous experience in public affairs, government, legislative affairs, or a related field. Experience working in or with government offices, public affairs firms, or advocacy organizations is preferred
  • Possess deep understanding of, or the ability to quickly gain familiarity with, the legislative and policy-making processes of the City of San Diego and the State of California, including how to track legislation, navigate government structures, and engage effectively with public officials and stakeholders
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, compelling messaging, talking points, and briefing materials. Must have strong public speaking skills
  • Proven knowledge of ethics laws and lobbying regulations related to government and public affairs
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with government staff and community leaders in a professional and strategic manner
  • Ability to monitor media coverage related to government affairs and public policy, identifying key issues relevant to the organization
  • Fluently bilingual in English/Spanish highly preferred
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed
  • Able to travel as needed
  • Minimum physical requirements: able to travel to and gain access to various areas of the ballpark for prolonged periods of time during games and events; able to lift and transport up to 25 pounds
  • As a condition of employment, you must successfully complete all post-offer, pre-employment requirements, including but not limited to a background check 

Pay and additional compensation:

Per the California pay transparency law, the base pay range for this full-time position is $26.44 to $28.85. As a candidate for this position, your pay and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, job-related skills and any other factors the San Diego Padres considers relevant to the hiring decision for this position.
