About Planned Parenthood Direct:

Planned Parenthood Direct (PPDirect) provides the virtual care infrastructure on behalf of Planned Parenthood, delivering trusted sexual and reproductive health care via the PPDirect web/mobile app. Our mission is to enable Planned Parenthood care from anywhere, ensuring accessible care for patients on the go. We partner directly with Planned Parenthood's regional affiliates, which operate Planned Parenthood's local health centers, to extend care beyond the clinic walls and to meet patient access needs nationwide.

About the Role:

At Planned Parenthood Direct, every line of code ships with a purpose: to make sure that anyone, anywhere, can access healthcare — regardless of geography, income, or circumstance. Our platform is the technical backbone of that promise. It powers telehealth visits for patients in rural and underserved communities, supports clinicians delivering care at Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide, and keeps critical services running reliably when patients need them most.

We're building infrastructure that sits at the intersection of technology and patient care. The work engineers do here shapes how people experience some of the most important moments of their lives. If you want your technical work to mean something in the real world, this is a rare opportunity to do exactly that.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to build and ship features on our TypeScript platform under the guidance of senior engineers. This role sits at the mid-level software engineer level on our career ladder — the focus is on delivering well-scoped, well-tested work reliably, developing strong engineering fundamentals, and growing toward greater ownership over time.

This role is remote (U.S.) and reports to the Director of Engineering. Compensation: $110,000 - $140,000 annually based on experience.

What You'll Do:

Engineering Execution

  • Build and ship well-tested features and bug fixes across the TypeScript monorepo (React, React Native, Node/Lambda, tRPC, Redux-Saga)
  • Write clear, maintainable code and meaningful tests for the work you own
  • Debug issues in existing systems, escalating architectural questions to your tech lead or senior engineers when appropriate
  • Work with your tech lead to break tickets down into clear, actionable implementation steps
  • Keep your work-in-progress visible and up to date in the team's tracking tools

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Product and QA to understand requirements and acceptance criteria for your assigned work
  • Ask clarifying questions and surface blockers or ambiguity early rather than guessing
  • Document your work clearly in tickets, pull requests, and Confluence as needed

Team & Culture

  • Participate actively in stand-ups, planning, and retros
  • Seek out and act on feedback and mentorship from senior engineers
  • Give thoughtful code review feedback to peers as your experience grows
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture

How You'll Do It:

Our engineering culture is anchored on three principles: Consistency, Velocity, and Accountability. In practice, this means writing tests alongside your code, asking for help early when you're stuck, closing the loop with your tech lead on decisions, and treating every code review — given or received — as a chance to learn.

What We're Looking For:

Required:

  • 3-6 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript, with hands-on experience in React or Node.js
  • Working familiarity with relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and REST or RPC-style APIs
  • Ability to complete well-scoped tasks independently and know when to ask for help
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback well, and grow within an engineering career ladder

Preferred:

  • Experience with React Native
  • Exposure to serverless or event-driven architectures (AWS Lambda, SQS, or equivalent)
  • Interest or prior experience in healthcare, telehealth, or other regulated/compliance-heavy domains
  • Some exposure to PHP/Laravel is a plus

Benefits and Perks:

  • In addition to compensation that reflects the nonprofit nature of our work and the scale of our mission, we offer:
  • Robust medical, dental, and vision plans plus FSA & HSA options for employees and dependents
  • 401K with company match
  • Generous time off and paid parental leave policies
  • Work from home and wellness reimbursements
  • Annual professional development stipend to support employee growth and advancement
  • Clear engineering career ladder with transparent promotion criteria
  • Inclusive and collaborative team culture where every voice — and every commit — is valued
