Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer

Athens, Georgia | Full-Time | Year-Round

We are an established tax and accounting practice in Athens, Georgia seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant / Senior Tax Preparer to join our team.

This is not a seasonal tax-preparation position. We are looking for an experienced tax professional who can independently manage a meaningful client workload, prepare complex individual and business returns, communicate directly with clients, and become a key long-term member of the firm.

The position offers the stability of an established client base combined with the opportunity to join the firm during an exciting period of modernization and growth.

What You'll Do

You will be responsible for preparing and managing individual and closely held business tax engagements, including:

  • Individual income tax returns — Form 1040

  • S corporation returns — Form 1120-S

  • Partnership returns — Form 1065

  • Business and individual tax planning

  • Extensions and estimated tax calculations

  • Tax research and issue resolution

  • Responding to client tax questions

  • Reviewing client documentation and identifying missing or inconsistent information

  • Communicating directly with clients to efficiently complete engagements

  • Supporting IRS and state tax notices when necessary

  • Coordinating with bookkeeping, payroll, and administrative staff

Depending on experience, the position may also include reviewing returns prepared by other team members and mentoring junior staff.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 4+ years of professional tax preparation experience

  • Significant recent experience preparing both individual and business tax returns

  • Ability to independently prepare Forms 1040, 1120-S and 1065

  • Experience managing multiple client engagements and deadlines during tax season

  • Strong understanding of federal and state income taxation

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Strong client communication skills

  • Ability to work independently without requiring extensive technical supervision

Strongly Preferred:

  • CPA or Enrolled Agent designation

  • Public accounting or established tax-practice experience

  • Experience reviewing tax returns

  • Experience with tax planning for small-business owners

  • Experience working with closely held businesses

  • Familiarity with professional tax preparation and workflow software

CPA licensure is preferred but not required for the right candidate.

The Person Who Will Thrive Here

You are probably already working in a CPA firm, tax practice, or accounting firm and know how to take ownership of a client relationship from documents through completed return.

You don't need someone standing over your shoulder telling you how to prepare a return.

You enjoy tax work, but you also want to work somewhere where your contribution matters, where you know the clients you serve, and where there is room to grow as the firm grows.

Why Join Us

  • Established and loyal client base

  • Year-round employment

  • Existing book of tax work — you will not be expected to build your own client base

  • Opportunity to work directly with individuals and business owners

  • Small-firm environment without large-firm bureaucracy

  • Significant autonomy for experienced professionals

  • Long-term growth and leadership opportunities

  • Modernization and expansion of an established local practice

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and capabilities

Compensation

Competitive base salary, targeted at approximately $90,000–$125,000+ depending on experience, credentials, productivity and ability to independently manage complex tax work.

Exceptional candidates with substantial business-return experience, review capability, or an established record of managing a significant tax workload may warrant compensation above the stated range.

Benefits and additional compensation opportunities will be discussed during the interview process.

Schedule

This is a full-time, year-round position based in Athens, Georgia.

Tax season requires additional hours consistent with the demands of a professional tax practice. Outside of peak filing periods, the firm operates on a substantially more traditional schedule.

We are interested in building a sustainable long-term working environment—not creating year-round tax-season hours.

How to Apply

Please submit your résumé along with a brief description of your recent tax experience.

Applicants should specifically indicate:

  • Approximate number of tax returns personally prepared annually

  • Approximate mix of individual versus business returns

  • Experience with Forms 1120-S and 1065

  • Whether you currently review returns prepared by others

  • CPA, EA or other relevant credentials

All inquiries will be handled confidentially.
