PRN Companion
Job Summary: A companion is responsible for providing a variety of non-medical services including safe and efficient accompaniment to a resident. Also, to join a resident to and from medical appointments as well as other activities to meet the daily needs of the residents.
Job Qualifications:
- Pleasant personality and telephone etiquette
- Possesses a high level of proficiency in the essential functions of this position
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assure provision of care and service, based on physical, psychological/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the residents served
- Must be able to read and effectively write in English and follow written and verbal instructions. Possessing an understanding of geriatric care or knowledge of the aging process is required
- Relevant skills include, but are not limited to: following directions, excellent people skills, customer service oriented, organization, attention to detail with good follow-through
- Posses a positive attitude and a strong desire to help others
Performance Expectations:

- Observe Resident Rights and Responsibilities at all times
- Experience in a health care environment and understanding of the many personalities and cultural awareness of residents
- Interacts with residents to ensure their needs are met. Interacts appropriately with team members and community guests
- Provide escort to and from medical appointments, and visits with family/friends or other outings
- Ability to remain alert, awake and responsive
- Grocery shopping, errands and personal shopping
- Meal preparation as well as future meal preparation
- Provide good company, conversation, entertainment and companionship
- Supplemental light housekeeping, laundry, ironing, changing of bed linens and the making up of beds, cleaning of refrigerators and washing dishes
- Organization and good time management skills
- Caring for animals
- Completes necessary, required documentation in timely matter
- Monitors individual requests, service and reactions to ensure all questions are answered and quality service is being provided
- Completes other responsibilities of Home Care Companion in accordance with community guidelines
- Adheres to all professional standards of conduct set forth in LifeSpire of VA policies and procedures
- Maintains acceptable departmental standards, objectives and goals to maximize the quality and service to residents, guests and staff
- Participates in on the job training and regular in-service training sessions; including necessary fire-drills and meetings
- Notifies supervisor immediately of any concerns or problems requiring attention
- In the event of an emergency after clinic hours, notify Health Care nursing of any concerns or problems. Strives for quality improvement at all times to ensure quality excellence, reduce risk liability and to enhance resident satisfaction
- Maintain awareness of and follows all of the communities written and verbally communicated expectations, policies and practices
- Maintains awareness of all community policies and procedures by reading the team member handbook and its published updates, studying departmental policies and procedures, and asking for clarification from supervisor as needed
- Satisfactorily complies with all company policies and procedures at all times
- Ensures confidentiality is constantly upheld and never compromised; asks for clarification by supervisor when uncertain about the appropriate steps to take
- Directs situations in which resident or staff behavior is questionable, or in which the communities stand is unclear, to supervisor for appropriate action
- Performs a variety of other duties, as requested, in an effort to contribute to the overall efficiency of the community
