The Float Personal Support Specialist (PSS) provides in-home personal care, homemaking, and companionship services to clients throughout a designated service region in Maine. This position is responsible for filling open shifts caused by staff absences, vacations, or vacancies, and may also participate in shadow shifts, observation shifts, staff training, and care plan updates when not assigned to client visits. This position guarantees a minimum of 25 worked hours per week providing client care, training support, or other assigned duties. In addition, the Employee will take rotating on-call coverage during business hours to ensure client needs are met when regular caregivers are unavailable. 

 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care services including bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility assistance, grooming, and hygiene.
  • Perform light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and medication reminders as directed by the care plan.
  • Deliver companionship and emotional support to clients.
  • Adapt quickly to different home environments and client care needs.
  • Accept and work assigned shifts within the guaranteed hours schedule.
  • Fill in for open shifts across the designated service region, including last-minute assignments.
  • Assist with shadowing and training new staff members 
  • Participate in observation shifts and care plan updates.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care provided and communicate regularly with the scheduling team.

 

Schedule

  • Weekdays and Weekends, between 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM. - On Call/Ready to work
  • Guaranteed up to 25 hours per week.
  • Major holidays off unless otherwise agreed upon.

Guaranteed Hours

  • The Employer will schedule the Employee for no fewer than 25 client care hours per week but may be scheduled for more depending on the need.
  • If client care hours fall short in a given week, the Employee will be assigned office duties, shadow shifts, training sessions, or short-term coverage to make up the difference.

On-Call Requirements

  • Rotating Schedule: On-call will be assigned in blocks (e.g., 7 a.m.–3 p.m.) on 2–3 weekdays per week, based on agency needs.
  • Coverage Limit: On-call shifts will be assigned only if the Employee’s total weekly hours (worked + on-call) will remain at or below 40 hours.

During assigned on-call hours, the Employee must:

  • Be reachable by phone or other agreed communication method.
  • Be able to accept and travel to assignments within the agreed travel radius.


Be prepared to start work within the Employer’s designated response time (typically within 1 hour).

 


Travel Requirements

  • Willingness to travel within the designated Maine service area.
  • May travel up to 1 hour for certain assignments.
  • Mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related travel between client homes.

Qualifications

  • Active PSS certification in Maine, or willingness to complete training within agency timelines.
  • Minimum of 1 year of caregiving experience preferred (home care, assisted living, or facility setting).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable, insured vehicle.
  • Ability to pass a background check and provide professional references.
  • Access to qualifying medical records
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to varied schedules and client needs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to assist clients with mobility and transfers.

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Guaranteed up to 25 hours/week of pay.
  • Mileage reimbursement at $0.70 per mile.
