Overview:

As our Youth Services Programming Coordinator, you will earn $26.00 - $30.00 per hour depending on qualifications. This job position is Full Time Non Exempt 37.50 hours per week including evening and weekend hours as needed. The Deerfield Public Library is seeking an energetic, creative individual to join our Youth Services team. The Youth Services Programming Coordinator is responsible for developing engaging library programs for children and families. This position involves all aspects of library programming, from hiring and scheduling outside presenters to leading programs, promoting and budgeting. This position also includes providing exceptional service to library patrons of all ages. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, the ability to multi-task effectively, and a positive, customer-focused attitude. What You’ll Do Every Day:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service to both patrons and staff.
  • Perform public desk duties, including reference assistance, readers' advisory and computer support.
  • Develop and implement community-focused programs such as storytimes, STEAM activities and other all-ages events.
  • Coordinate all aspects of programming, including identifying and working with presenters, managing budgets and contracts, scheduling, promotion and event hosting.
  • Maintain accurate program records, including correspondence, contracts, financial documents and attendance data.
  • Contribute content to the quarterly library newsletter and collaborate with the Communications and Outreach Manager on media announcements and event signage.
  • Represent and promote the Library at community events such as Community Day, National Library Week, Farmers Market and assist with public relations and promotions.
  • Host or arrange for staff coverage at all scheduled programs.
  • Prepare and report monthly statistics, analyze survey results and provide evaluations.
  • Collaborate with other departments on large-scale programming initiatives.
  • Build and maintain programming partnerships with local organizations.
  • Manage the youth programming budget and provide budget recommendations to the Assistant Director of Adult and Youth Services.
  • Work with Youth Services staff to plan and execute the annual Summer Reading Program, including theme development, displays, reading logs, prizes, promotional materials and school outreach.
  • Facilitate clear communication among staff, managers and the Library Director through regular meetings and updates.
  • Participate in professional organizations, networking opportunities and relevant forums.
  • Apply sound judgment in interpreting Library and departmental policies.
  • Seek and incorporate feedback from staff, patrons and community members to enhance youth programming.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and courteously, including during emergencies.
  • Serve as Person In Charge when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Experience working with children, teens and caregivers in public libraries or other customer service settings is required.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging trends in youth library programming.
  • Appreciation for diversity and a commitment to inclusion, with the ability to engage with diverse populations across all age groups.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to address large groups clearly.
  • Organization skills and attention to detail required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, social media and various technologies such as e-readers and e-resource platforms like Overdrive, Hoopla and Kanopy.
