A Detailer at a car dealership is responsible for restoring and maintaining the cosmetic appearance of new and used vehicles, ensuring they meet dealership standards for the showroom, customer delivery, or service department.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
  • Interior Cleaning: Vacuuming interiors, shampooing carpets and upholstery, cleaning dashboards, consoles, and windows, and deodorizing vehicle cabins.
  • Exterior Reconditioning: Washing, drying, waxing, buffing, and polishing vehicle exteriors to remove dirt, grease, and light scratches.
  • Engine & Wheels: Cleaning engine compartments, applying tire dressing, and cleaning wheels/rims.
  • Quality Inspection: Inspecting vehicles for defects, such as missing parts, stains, or scratches, and performing minor cosmetic touch-ups.
  • Workflow Management: Moving vehicles between locations, keeping the wash bay or service area clean, and managing cleaning inventory.
  • Protective Treatments: Applying protective coatings to paint, wax, and fabric protectants. 
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License: A current, valid license is required with a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • Experience: Previous experience is preferred but not always required; many dealerships offer on-the-job training.
  • Physical Stamina: The job involves standing, kneeling, bending, and walking for extended periods.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to spot small stains and ensure every part of the vehicle is pristine.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to operate cleaning equipment like buffers, steamers, high-pressure washers, and vacuums.
  • Schedule Flexibility: Availability for weekends and evenings is frequently required to meet fast-paced, high-volume demands. 
Key Skills
  • Excellent time management to complete cars efficiently (typically 2-4 hours per car).
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of proper, safe usage of chemicals and cleaning agents.
Typical Physical Demands
  • Bending, kneeling, reaching, and standing for long hours.
  • Working in varying weather conditions (if working in an open wash bay).
