Job Summary:
The Monitor Technician is responsible for monitoring patients' heart statuses, specifically interpreting basic cardiac rhythms and documenting EKG tracings, to ensure patient safety in intensive care or step-down units. 
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Cardiac Monitoring: Continuously observe and interpret EKG tracings from telemetry-monitored patients.
  • Documentation: Accurately document rhythm strips and patient data.
  • Alert Communication: Promptly notify appropriate nursing or medical staff of dysrhythmias or deviations from the patient’s baseline.
  • Equipment Management: Utilize monitoring systems to full capacity, including troubleshooting and ensuring proper functionality.
  • Patient Safety: Adhere to infection control and safety protocols. 
     
Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification/Experience: Completion of a monitor technician surveillance program is required upon hire. If not, a certificate program must be completed within 90 days of employment.
  • Experience Substitution: 1 year of experience in monitor technician surveillance within the last 5 years.
  • Competency: Must successfully pass the Sentara Basic Arrhythmia competency tool/exam before releasing from orientation.
  • Skills: Strong cardiac anatomy/physiology knowledge, communication, and organizational skills.
