An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Registered Nurse (RN) at Johns Hopkins Medicine provides specialized, high-acuity nursing care to critically ill patients. Job Summary
The ICU RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, and delivery of evidence-based nursing care for patients with life-threatening conditions. Operating within a multidisciplinary team, the nurse manages advanced technology and medications to stabilize patients, while providing emotional support and education to families during critical health crises.
Key Responsibilities
- Performing frequent, comprehensive physical assessments and continuous hemodynamic monitoring of critically ill patients.
- Managing advanced life-support equipment, including mechanical ventilators, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and ventricular assist devices (VAD).
- Administering high-alert medications, such as vasopressors, anticoagulants, and sedatives, with precise titration based on patient response.
- Collaborating closely with intensivists, respiratory therapists, and specialized consultants to execute complex treatment plans.
- Interpreting cardiac rhythms, lab results, and diagnostic imaging to anticipate and respond to rapid changes in patient status.
- Leading or assisting in emergency bedside procedures, including intubations, central line placements, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Facilitating multidisciplinary rounds and advocating for the patient’s clinical and psychosocial needs.
- Providing compassionate end-of-life care and supporting families through difficult decision-making processes.
- Maintaining meticulous documentation of all interventions, monitor readings, and patient outcomes in the electronic health record.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A valid and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state of Maryland or a recognized compact state.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program is required for most positions at Johns Hopkins.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.
- Minimum of one to two years of recent experience in a high-acuity ICU or Step-down unit is preferred.
- Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification is highly desirable and often encouraged for career advancement.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to maintain composure and precision in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a diverse medical team.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a fast-paced, high-technology critical care unit.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods, typically 12-hour shifts.
- Must be able to lift, move, and position patients and heavy medical equipment (up to 50 lbs or more with assistance).
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE)
