Registered Nurse - Telemetry

The Telemetry Registered Nurse provides high quality nursing care to patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring and moderate acuity medical care. This per diem role at Sentara offers flexible day or night shift options. The Tele RN must be skilled in rhythm interpretation, rapid assessment, and delivering patient centered care in a fast paced hospital environment. A minimum of 2+ years of recent Telemetry experience is required, and candidates must be available to start ASAP.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Monitoring
- Provide direct nursing care to patients requiring telemetry monitoring for cardiac conditions, postoperative care, respiratory compromise, and other moderate acuity needs.
- Interpret cardiac rhythms, recognize abnormalities, and respond promptly to changes.
- Conduct thorough assessments, implement individualized care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, and treatments per provider orders.
Clinical Skills & Interventions
- Monitor telemetry strips and vital signs, escalating concerns to providers as needed.
- Perform clinical tasks such as wound care, central line care, catheter care, oxygen therapy, and titration per policy.
- Identify early signs of deterioration and initiate appropriate interventions or rapid response activation.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with physicians, charge nurses, respiratory therapists, and multidisciplinary care teams.
- Provide clear communication during shift handoffs, rounds, and patient updates.
- Educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, and discharge planning.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the EMR system.
- Adhere to hospital policies, telemetry protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Uphold safety, infectioncontrol, and HIPAA standards at all times.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state specific).
- Minimum 2+ years of recent Telemetry experience in a hospital setting.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
- Strong telemetry interpretation and clinical assessment skills.
- Ability to work independently during per diem shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- BSN preferred (not required).
- Experience in a high acuity Tele or Stepdown environment.
- Proficiency with cardiac monitoring systems and EMR platforms.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and patient education abilities.
Work Environment
- Telemetry/medical surgical unit at Sentara, caring for moderate acuity adult patients.
- Fast paced environment requiring multitasking and strong clinical judgment.
- Per diem scheduling with options for day or night shifts.
- Requires prolonged standing, patient mobility support, and use of clinical equipment.
