Nuclear Medicine Technologist (Nuclear Med Tech) - Travel Position (with $7,500 Completion Bonus)

Location: Bakersfield, CA
Job Type: Travel Contract
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 5x8 Days
Pay: $2,579.60/week (plus $2,500 completion bonus per contract, up to $7,500 after three contracts) 

 


Position Summary:

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures using radiopharmaceuticals and specialized imaging equipment. This role ensures the safe handling, administration, and disposal of radioactive materials, delivers highquality imaging for accurate diagnosis, and upholds the highest standards of patient care, radiation safety, and regulatory compliance.

 


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Procedure Execution

  • Perform nuclear medicine procedures including SPECT, PET, cardiac perfusion, bone scans, thyroid studies, and therapeutic administrations under physician supervision.
  • Educate patients and families regarding exam preparation, procedure expectations, and radiation safety considerations.
  • Assess patient condition before, during, and after imaging procedures to ensure safety and comfort.

Radiopharmaceutical Preparation & Administration

  • Prepare, calculate, and administer radiopharmaceuticals following established safety and aseptic protocols.
  • Verify dosage accuracy, complete dose calibrations, and maintain documentation of radioactive materials.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and respond appropriately.

Imaging & Equipment Operation

  • Operate gamma cameras, PET/CT scanners, dose calibrators, well counters, surveys meters, and related nuclear medicine equipment.
  • Ensure proper positioning, image acquisition, QC testing, and postprocessing for accurate diagnostic results.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate equipment maintenance with vendors/biomedical staff.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain strict radiation safety practices following ALARA principles for patients, staff, and self.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly quality control on imaging systems and radiopharmaceutical equipment.
  • Comply with state and federal regulations (NRC, OSHA, DOT), Joint Commission standards, and facility policies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for isotopes, inventory, disposal logs, and regulatory audits.

Collaboration & Workflow

  • Work closely with Radiologists, Cardiologists, Physicists, and healthcare teams to ensure accurate and timely imaging.
  • Assist with scheduling workflows, patient throughput, and exam prioritization based on acuity.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, competency reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

 


Job Requirements

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program.
  • Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current Nuclear Medicine Technologist certification (one of the following):
    • ARRT (N) – American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, Nuclear Medicine
    • CNMT – Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB)
  • State licensure where applicable.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of clinical nuclear medicine experience preferred.
  • PET/CT and cardiology nuclear imaging experience strongly preferred.
  • New graduates with certification may be considered based on facility needs.

Skills

  • Proficiency in nuclear medicine imaging, radiation safety, and radiopharmaceutical handling.
  • Strong technical and criticalthinking abilities.
  • Excellent patient care, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fastpaced environment.
  • Competence with PACS, RIS, EMR, and imaging postprocessing software.
