Registered Nurse (RN) – Corrections Travel Position

Pay: $2,005.20/week (plus $1,575 completion bonus per contract, up to $4,725 after three contracts)

Job Description

ATC Healthcare is seeking a dependable and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) for an 8-week travel contract in a correctional healthcare setting located in Roanoke, Virginia. The RN will provide patient-centered care to individuals in a secure environment, assisting with medication administration, assessments, and emergency response.

This role requires a nurse who can remain calm under pressure, communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and uphold the highest standards of safety and professionalism. The schedule follows a 6 PM–6 AM, 36/48 rotation with every other weekend required, and there may be an opportunity for a 7 days on / 7 days off rotation depending on facility availability.

Note: Any request for time off exceeding 3 days will not be permitted. A site-specific background screening is required, including documentation of prior corrections experience (if applicable).

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients within a secure correctional facility.
• Conduct patient assessments, administer prescribed medications, and monitor ongoing health conditions.
• Utilize the CoEMR system for accurate medication pass documentation and patient charting.
• Respond to urgent or emergent situations, initiating appropriate interventions.
• Assist with intake screenings, triage, and chronic disease management.
• Maintain patient confidentiality, safety, and infection control compliance at all times.
• Collaborate with physicians, other nurses, and correctional officers to ensure quality patient outcomes.
• Work flexible rotating shifts (36/48 rotation, nights) and every other weekend as required.
• Attend required orientation and adhere to facility policies, including dress code (no maroon or green horizontal stripes).

Qualifications

• Active Virginia RN or Compact State license (required).
• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
• Minimum of 1 year of recent experience in corrections, emergency, or med-surg nursing (required).
• Certifications: BLS (required).
• Must complete all site-specific background requirements, including:
  • Detailed employment history with facility name and state for prior correctional experience (PREA check required if applicable).
  • Submission of a Driver’s License, Social Security Card, and professional photo upon offer.
  • Fingerprinting scheduled and completed on-site (Mon–Thurs).
• Ability to work safely and professionally in a secure, high-stress environment.
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination and recent tuberculosis test required.
