The CERTIFIED SCHOOL NURSE (CSN) coordinates the school health program including the delivery of services to students and serves as the health resource to staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. The school nurse duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, state board of education policies and procedures and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
ATC Healthcare is currently looking for a Certified School Nurses for the month of May 2026. Position is located in Steger, IL.

EDUCATION: RN Nursing degree from accredited school of nursing at the Bachelor’s Degree level.
LICENSURE: Active, unencumbered nursing license in the state of practice.
EXPERIENCE: 1 year of work experience in the area of practice or per client requirements.
SKILLS: Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Possess flexibility and the ability to fit in as a team member. Able to function independently.
CREDENTIALS: Health and other screening tests as required by specific facilities and license as required by the state. BLS with AED.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in various client settings; possible exposure to blood and bodily fluids and infectious diseases; and ability to work flexible schedules to meet client needs.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL EFFORT: May require prolonged standing and walking and ability to handle moving and lifting patients with assistance. Requires working under some stressful conditions to meet deadlines and patient needs. Ability to make quick decisions to meet each patient's individualized needs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/ ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
1. Complies with ATC policies and procedures.
2. Complies with school district policies and procedures.
3. The CSN provides and/or delegates to licensed personnel direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students.
4. The CSN identifies health problems, makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment, develops educational modifications, provides follow-up and evaluation, and maintains appropriate documentation.
5. The CSN provides counseling and follow-up services to students with disabilities as delineated in the IEP/504.
6. The CSN follows up on homebound students needing related health care services.
7. The CSN provides intervention in times of school crisis, i.e. death, suicide, traumatic events.
8. The CSN initiates, encourages, and participates in health education programs for children.
9. The CSN assists special education children to accept or adjust to physical, emotional or health limitations.
10. The CSN provides health counseling to parents of special education students, and provides individual and group health counseling to special education students.
11. The CSN develops the medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of the medication given at school.
12. The CSN coordinates activities of local schools concerned with communicable disease regulations.
13. The CSN assists with the State and Federal mandated screenings and provides follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical impairments.
14. The CSN collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to determine if health adversely affects the student’s educational process and is also responsible for the development of IEP goals, benchmarks, and accommodations for students requiring health related services.
15. Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
16. Documents accurately and completely services provided.
17. Demonstrates thorough understanding of all requirements, practice standards and regulatory requirements relating to the administration of medications; facility policy and procedures; documentation requirements; medication education.
18. Continues professional development through in-service education, workshops, conferences, and self-study necessary to maintain current knowledge applicable to the position.
19. Provides age-appropriate care to the population served.
20. Follows infection control procedures and wears appropriate personal protective equipment as needed.
21. Communicates information effectively to appropriate personnel.
22. Performs other duties as assigned.
