Job Description

The Crisis Response Team Specialist is a crucial “First Responder” within the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility, which operates 365 days a year, 24/7. The Crisis Response Team Specialist will immediately respond to disturbances, escapes, fires, evacuations, natural disasters, and/or non-emergency responses. As part of a specially trained team skilled in trauma-informed response, this role is vital in ensuring the safety and security of the facility and the community it serves.

The Crisis Response Team Specialist will develop specialized skills in handling multiple threat levels in the facility through a trauma-informed lens. This includes using de-escalation and the tension reduction cycle. The Crisis Response Team Specialist will remain mindful of the unique nature of dealing with each individual resident and be prepared to provide the appropriate response to neutralize any acts of aggression or mental health crises. This role offers a dynamic and challenging environment that will foster personal and professional growth.

Required Tasks

• Provide crisis intervention, stabilization, and support to units within the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility where juvenile residents present behavioral health concerns or are in an active state of crisis.

• Evaluate posed threats to determine the need for a supportive response, with a primary focus on verbal de-escalation.

• Conduct routine and non-routine welfare checks of all housing units to ensure stability.

• Conduct routine and non-routine safety and sanitation inspections of all housing units to mitigate entry of illegal contraband or weapons into the facility.

• Assess behavior patterns and adverse health conditions in juveniles and follow proper medical reporting procedures.

• Conduct routine fire safety inspections and test duress alarms for functionality.

• Conduct routine fire and emergency evacuation drills.

• Build relationships with juvenile residents and possess the ability to establish trust and cooperation with the residents while maintaining a high standard of professionalism, assertiveness, and leadership.

• Transportation of juvenile residents, as needed.

• Respond safely to the facility in the event of a critical incident if called upon.

• Prepare and process incident reports with accurate detail and information.

Job Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements 
Candidates may qualify through any of the following routes:
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in any fieldDegrees in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related areas are preferred but not required.
OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience in any of the following areas:
    • Law enforcement, corrections, or military service
    • Security (institutional, corporate, hospital, or campus)
    • Youth services, residential care, or human services
    • Behavioral health, crisis intervention, or community support roles
    • Other roles involving safety, supervision, or direct care responsibilities
OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and demonstrated transferable skills such as:
    • Conflict resolution
    • Customer service in highstress environments
    • Leadership or team supervision
    • Experience working with vulnerable populations
    • Experience in structured, policydriven workplaces
Additional Requirement
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License (or be able to obtain one within a specified timeframe).

Credentials

  • OIG, SAM, OFAC and NSO screening.
  • Hepatitis B Statement or Declination [OSHA 29 CFR, 1910.1030(f)(2)].
  • Tuberculosis screening, including an initial baseline TB test prior to being placed at the facility. Some facilities may require a 2-step PPD which consists of two-step testing with one week between tests, within the preceding 12 month or within the contract time frame. The Quantiferon Gold test or T-spot may be used in lieu of the a TB skin test.
  • Drug screening as required by the contract.
  • Physical Exam
  • Clear criminal history check
  • (3) educational or professional references unrelated to the applicant
  • Competency testing, self skills testing, and Osha Approved Core Modules 
  • Be willing to accept appointment to any shift in a twenty four (24) and seven (7) day operation. 
  • Accept mandatory overtime
